Web 2.0 What is it?

For the first time I’ve heard about Web 2.0 only two weeks ago on the PR and New Media lecture. Can I say that I missed something in my life? And what is interesting – I’m not the only one who is unfamiliar with it. On the Russian website about PR I’ve found a poll “Web 2.0 is…” And 40% of the respondents answered that they have heard about it for the first time.

I decided to make mini-research on this topic. There’s loads of information in the web. What I found out is that Web 2.0 is about interaction what was impossible in Web 1.0. I understand that Google, Wikipedia, blogging is all about it. But I can’t find clear definition of Web 2.0. As I can see even creators can’t exactly tell what Web 2.0 is. So does this definition exist? Or maybe there is no need in it?

So what is Web 2.0 for you?

  1. Well, for it is nothing. Just one word and figures. I think it won’t mean smth well-defined for people if even creators can’t explain it.

    P.S. Good start!

  2. It’s my everyday life)))

  3. Web 2.0 is a good step for involving us in the web and making and interaction, but when we consume it in 2-3 years time it won’t be enough and probablu we will want more and more :) So Web 3.0 should be on its way :)

  4. Web 2.0 is a complex thing and so-called AJAX is an essential part of it.

AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript And XML and was originally implemented in 2005 by famous Google mail service GMAIL.

Nowadays AJAX is an extremely powerful tool to make user-friendly web interfaces and is widely accepted and used by most western sites (unfortunately not russian). It has quite a range of advantages but I’ll mention the key ones.

Firstly, AJAX makes possible to update only needed blocks of information without reloading the whole page. This block interacts with the server (send queries and recieves answers, which update it) according to user actions and we don’t notice it. It resembles the way how office applications work. The advantage is clear: no embarassing “whiteness ” on the screen while the page is loading.

Secondly, a huge part of code is put on the client-side (in browser) and is cached. It means that the code is taken from browser cache, not downloaded from the server. It reduces the traffic and the time we wait for the page loading.

So… AJAX is cool, Web 2.0 rules and I’m late for my lessons! Bye
