My friend gave me a link to a nice video about viral marketing. And it explains what viral marketing is and how great it can be.

But I’m actually scared of term “viral marketing”. Even its name associates with illness. I’m looking at the problem from the perspectives of companies not customers. In the age of new technologies all information spreads so fast that you can’t follow and control it. There are no excuses for mistakes. If you product is sooo good that it makes people talk and talk about it – you are a WINNER!

But if it is not? Or if it is not anymore? What can you do? You probably won’t have a chance to save it with the help of advertising or any other traditional marketing communications tools.

So if companies want to use viral marketing they must be very careful and consider all the consequences.

It is not very up to date news but today it is officially confirmed that Dmitry Medvedev has won the presidential elections in Russia. But it was known a lot before 2 March, the actual date of elections. After Putin announced Medvedev to be his successor nobody doubted that it was the next Russian president.

70.23% of Russians have voted for Medvedev. It is percentage of people who could vote for anyone Putin would tell. So Hilary Clinton doesn’t need to know how to spell Medvedev’s name. Russia has changed the president but hasn’t changed the king.

People voted for stability. But is it a real stability? Russia is trying to make an image of prosper country. And it is good for both, for Russia and Western countries. USA if you want. Russians are proud of their “NEW” country, in media we read how everything is good now and will be perfect in the future. People don’t think about real problems. And West, on the other hand, gets a strong enemy. Traditional one. But virtual at this time. So not dangerous. Everyone is happy!

And what about Medvedev? Is he able to overshadow MISTER Putin? Mass media can do everything. But it’s decisions are not as free as we want them to be…

Too many issues! But some food for thought!
